The composition Do I need to shave my chest was shown at the international BODYTALK exhibition at Ebeltoft Glasmuseet in Denmark in 2014. It simultaneously references personal and medical experiences of the body while reminding us of the inevitable decay and break-down that comes with time.
The process of making the work required an intimate collaboration with an individual who had undergone a medical sternotomy. The scarred part of the body was cast and photographed, data gathered about the medical procedure and the impact of the experience.
As personal and clinical concerns intermingle, the work is a commentary on a medical procedure and the human reaction to such procedures. A “surgery bowl” in kiln formed glass sits alongside a glass cast of the body – with inclusions of metal indicating internal wiring. And a text piece fuses together both medical and personal narratives of the event.
